What is Art Walk?

The GPT Group (GPT) appreciates the role that public art can play in animating the urban and retail environment, providing a source of visual delight and inquiry and reinforcing the bonds of place and community. In this spirit, a number of sites for public art were earmarked as part of the development of The Quarter, with a brief to focus on commissioning local and/or Top End artists.
GPT initially sought advice from the Darwin-based, Managing Director of di CROCO, Heather Brown and involved Darwin-based curator Maurice O’Riordan as curatorial consultant on the project. O’Riordan is currently Director, Northern Centre for Contemporary Art Darwin (NCCA) and a former editor of Art Monthly Australia magazine.
In the course of choosing artists and particular designs for commission, the work of over 20 local/Top End artists was considered. This included a majority of Darwin-based artists along with artists from Yirrkala, the Tiwi Islands, Bali, and Cairns. It also included artists at varying stages of their career, from very emerging to very established.
The final selection involved the commissioning of 7 artists for 6 public artworks. It includes the work of an emerging Larrakia artist, Nadine Lee, and emerging Darwin-based sculptor Joel Mitchell. It also includes the work of revered Yolngu artist Naminapu Maymuru-White assisted by her son Jamie Wanambi, and of established Darwin artists Bill Davies and Alison Dowell. In a nod to Darwin’s proximity to Southeast Asia, it also includes the work of Bali-based artist Wayan Wirawan which he produced in response to a visit to Darwin and the Top End in 2015.
GPT hopes to renew some of these public art commissions over time, and to continue to explore other potential public art sites as part of Casuarina Square. GPT aims to support the local artists by raising their profiles and encourage audiences to engage with the work in a different context.
