Meet Me at Mindil Markets: a Style Adventure
Blogged by: Jo Moo 04 Jun 2017 View comments
Mindil beach markets are a multicultural melting pot of tantalizing food, enchanting aromas and idyllic sunsets. They’re also the perfect place to showcase your personal style! In today’s blog, stylist Jo Moo chats to four stylish Darwin locals about their unique looks, and shares how you can apply professional personal styling processes to your own wardrobe.

Your personal style should reflect your identity, lifestyle and personality and your clothing should feel like a second skin. If you get overwhelmed by the evolving nature of fashion, look for pieces that provide building blocks to create a variety of outfits. Regardless of your ‘level’ of style, I always advise including some investment pieces to add longevity to your wardrobe.
Having your own personal style can help you feel confident, and it doesn’t mean you’ve got to be bold all the time. You can be stylish and look great, whether you choose to turn heads or opt to blend in! Selecting styles that suit your personality, lifestyle and body shape is the key.

I recently met with Kata, Sophie, Thomas and Godwill to help them identify their personal style profile through a professional consultation. With so many exciting dry season events just around the corner, I hope it will inspire you to get creative with your own wardrobe.

KATA WEARS: Maxi dress and cuff from the Bodycon Shop. Sandals from Dotti. Sunglasses, chain drop choker necklace and bag from Bardot. Earrings and rings from Lovisa.

KATA

Describe your individual style?
I think my personal style would be quite bold and out there with most of the things I like to wear. I love to match things up that wouldn't usually be put together by most people.

What influences you or shapes your style?
The main thing that would influence my style would be my love for interesting fashion and how I can express myself through the way that I dress. I’m also learning from a very good friend of mine about what looks good together, and what creates a quirky look that is still quite chic.

What attracted you to the components that you selected for the shoot?

Dress: I love the color and the print of the dress. I also loved how flowy it was. I usually wear flowing clothes.
Footwear: the shoes were just super fun and gave the look a bit of a playful touch!
Accessories: I chose these accessories because I love big statement pieces, and I love chunky jewellery. I think that it adds an edgy look to an outfit, when you pair it up with some chunky accessories.

What colours do you prefer and feel comfortable wearing?
I feel completely comfortable wearing any and all colour! I absolutely love putting print on print. The brighter the better!

Do you prefer plain, prints, florals, or stripes?
I really appreciate all types of clothing, but my go to would probably be my Camilla round neck kaftans, which are full of print.

Do you base your decision on fabric?
Yes, I can tell if a garment is made well. I know from personal experience that it's well worth spending the extra money on one piece than it is to spend the same money on 10 pieces that will last you only a few wears.

What style of shoes do you prefer to wear?
I love wearing really high heels! I feel like every woman on earth should wear high heels because first of all, they add so much to an outfit and second of all they are SO SEXY!

THOMAS WEARS: T-shirt from Just Jeans. Darwin chino shorts from Connor. Bag from Mitchells Adventure Store. Deck shoes from Spendless Shoes. Ray Ban sunglasses from Bright Eyes. Daniel Wellington watch from Sterns Jewellers.

THOMAS

Describe your individual style?
I would say I take on a simple look, with some modern gentlemen traits and a little bit of an eccentric difference.

What influences you or shapes your style?
Plain is my thing but comfort and practicality are a huge influence on what I wear. Most of the time –  if it’s comfy and practical – I’ll wear it despite the style. But my liking of leather and the culture it carries definitely has an influence on the things I wear.

What attracted you to the components that you selected for the shoot?

Top: Its comfort, and the earthy red colour.
Shorts: The shorts suited the shirt greatly, and I like a tan colour that often suits my leather watch straps.
Footwear: The brown leather look of the shoes matched the rest of the clothing.
Accessories: I like the Daniel Wellington watch for the thin simplicity of the design. I would choose leather straps over metal ones any day, for the comfort and the look. The Ray Ban sunglasses – I like the look of round sunglasses, and the quality of Ray Ban sunnies is the decider for me! The khaki canvas bag –  I love a good bag to commute with, and this one is the perfect size for my bible.

What colours do you prefer and feel comfortable wearing?
Down to earthy, simple colours. I like a good, dark-reddish-maroon colour, and a nice plain white or black shirt is usually the go for me. I’ll match with a pair of shorts that suit the top, most of the time being light, khaki or tan colours.

Do you prefer plain, prints, florals, or stripes?
Plain is my preference, I like the simple look.

Do you base your decision on fabric?
Fabric is definitely a consideration, especially in the tropics. Cotton is comfortable, but much warmer than other materials such as nylon. The majority of the time, comfort wins.

What style of shoes do you prefer to wear?
I usually go with an easy pair of thongs. But I do love a good pair of leather shoes when I want to look a bit nicer.

GODWILL WEARS: Impact slim fit jeans, long tee and sunglasses from Connor. Converse Chuck Taylor All Star II from Intersport. Thomas Sabo bracelet and Axis watch from Sterns Jewellers.

GODWILL

Describe your individual style?
Eclectic.

What influences you or shapes your style?
Personal taste and role models.

What attracted you to the components that you selected for the shoot?

Top: Light coloured, an even and not so busy pattern. It’s also long sleeved, which is good against the elements (direct sunlight and overly air conditioned rooms).
Pants: Deep/dark blue colour and comfy stretch denim.
Footwear: A classic look. Comfortable feel, and its Converse.
Accessories: Axis watch – classic look, light feel and purpose built to tell the time! It can work with just about any look or occasion. Jewellery – beads always have to be made from a natural element. They remind me I am part of something bigger and beyond me.

What colours do you prefer and feel comfortable wearing?
Darker colours are preferable for a masculine appeal. However light coloured tee shirts work well to direct attention to the face.

Do you prefer plain, prints, florals, or stripes?
Plain. It just feels right for me.

Do you base your decision on fabric?
Yes. It also depends on occasion.  Cotton feels great on my skin, but mostly when I’m indoors. Stretch denims are for always, for comfort, easy care and ergonomic function.

What style of shoes do you prefer to wear?
Lifestyle footwear or sneakers.

SOPHIE WEARS: Top, skirt, backpack, slides, hat and sunglasses from Dotti. Marc Jacobs watch, Thomas Sabo beaded charm bracelets, and Georgini rings from Sterns Jewellers. Earrings and necklace from Portmans.

SOPHIE

Describe your individual style?
My style is a mixture of classic and romantic. In my free time, I also like to dress sporty.

What influences you or shapes your style?
A lot of the time, people that I see on the street inspire my style.

What attracted you to the components that you selected for the shoot?

Top: I really liked the colour of the shirt that I was wearing, and I also liked the loose shape of it. The style of the shirt reminded me of Darwin.
Skirt: I selected the denim skirt because I have a similar one at home which is one of my favourite pieces of clothing.
Footwear: I was wearing a pair of black sandals which fitted really well with my black bag.
Accessories: My first choice for jewellery is always rose gold. That’s why I chose a really nice pair of rose gold earrings and a rose gold necklace.

What colours do you prefer and feel comfortable wearing?
Denim, white, light and fresh colours.

Do you prefer plain, prints, florals, or stripes?
I love wearing either plain clothes with nice jewellery or floral shirts and dresses.

Do you base your decision on fabric?
I don’t really focus on it. But I like soft and comfortable clothes.

What style of shoes do you prefer to wear?
I usually wear different types of sneakers. In summer, I like wearing sandals.
