No one does a festival quite like Darwin.
June is here and with it comes the much-anticipated Darwin festival season. One need only couple the exciting array of local events with the beautiful, sunny days and cool nights of the dry season to see that it’s a recipe for pure enjoyment. Read on to be reminded of Darwin’s best festival events in the coming months.

Major Festival Events

The Darwin Fringe Festival will take place from July 7 – a vibrant, ten-day exhibit of fringe talent. The diverse program is set to showcase music, theatre, dance, comedy, performance art, film and much more, so there’s certainly something for everyone!
The official Darwin Festival will then kick off the following month on August 10. With a varied program including shows from Opera Australia, Sydney Dance Company and the Circa troupe, the 18-day event will offer a festive atmosphere filled with delicious food and free performances to entertain and inspire.

Sporting Spectacles

'For two minutes, a crowd of 20,000 hold their breath as twelve of Australia’s top thoroughbreds chase the Northern Territory’s Holy Grail.’ Such is the drama of the Carlton Mid Darwin Cup Day on August 7, when the Darwin Turf Club will welcome visitors for an epic day of trackside fun.
Can’t wait until August? The Crownbet Darwin Triple Crown Supercars will make some serious noise on the weekend of June 16-18. Head to the Hidden Valley Raceway to witness the exhilarating Virgin Australia Supercars Championship, watch live music acts including The Hilltop Hoods, Illy and Hot Dub Time Machine and enjoy food and markets on Mindil Beach. There’s even a Disney Fun Zone for the kids!

Culture and Community

Embracing the wide-open landscape of the Northern Territory by car also makes for quite the adventure, and festival season offers ample excuses to do just. Regional events like the Mataranka Never Never Festival in late May, the Barunga Festival in June and then the Garrmalang Festival in Darwin’s CBD each present unique opportunities to celebrate the diversity of the local communities, their people and the artistic talent of the Northern Territory.

Live Music Galore

Kicking off with BASSINTHEGRASS music festival on May 20 (The Rubens, Amy Shark, Tash Sultana, The Veronicas and more), Darwin has a whole series of fantastic gigs lined up for live music buffs.
Take MJR and Nova’s ‘I Love the Nineties Tour’ – it’s coming to Darwin on June 11. Featuring classic nineties legends Vanilla Ice, Salt N Pepa, Color Me Badd and more, it’s one of the biggest throwback events of the year. But that’s not all!
Now hailed as one of Darwin’s biggest electronic music festivals, Summer Sessions is back in 2017 with an epic line-up, guaranteed to get the party going. Featuring Tkay Maidza, Slumberjack, Zhu, MaRLo and more, the event kicks off at the Darwin Botanical Gardens Amphitheatre on June 12.
Speaking of outdoor stages and trackside events, why not get your festival season game on early? Be prepared with fold-up chairs from Kmart at Casuarina Square, a quality picnic rug from Bed Bath N’ Table and some practical, melamine picnic wear from House.
